Yak Talk Easy Journalist After a very busy week in Extremadura freshwater fishing it was time to turn my attention to some kayak fishing and prepare the kayaks for the arrival of travel journalist Marcus Waring. He had been commissioned by airline Easy Jet to write a feature on the kayak fishing side of the business for their in-flight magazine. Each issue is read by around three million passengers. The Spanish Tourist Board had provided his travel tickets so obviously I was eager for Marcus to enjoy his experience here in Southern Spain. As usual when journalists or camera crews appear the weather turns to……well lets just say it is never as good as you want it to be! Marcus did, it has to be said, endure some rough seas while he was here. On the first day we were joined by Gareth, David and Kathryn who I was originally due to take out earlier in the week but, once again due to the bad weather, had cancelled until Marcus arrived hoping for an improvement. We all had a good session fishing off the wide open beaches of Canada De Gallego in a fairly heavy swell but pleasant all the same. David and Gareth managed six fish each and Marcus landed three before breaking the rod in half. Marcus is a true adventure sports junkie and it seemed the rougher it was the more he enjoyed it. He has travelled the world covering some gruelling competitions and extreme sports for the English press so it was a surprise when he was so impressed with the area here he invited his girlfriend Lola to travel down from Madrid to join us. Over the next few days the fishing became more difficult as storms hit the area. At one point the fish finder was indicating we were riding swell of two metres. Strong stomachs required for this but when deadlines have to met, together with the fact that Marcus is obviously a very experienced kayaker, then these things have to be done however tough. The radio crackled from shore that we kept disappearing. If only she knew! We were on a major roller coaster of a ride. It was becoming difficult to keep any form of tension on the fishing lines or even detect a bite so enough was enough and we called it a day. The next day was worse, force five blowing, and crashing waves onto shore. Marcus was grinning from ear to ear as he sent girlfriend Lola - looks similar to Penelope Cruz and about seven stone wet through, out to sea. I did try and mention to Marcus that she may not have the strength for it but he laughed that off. The wind took her down the coast in no time and I went after her to make sure everything was ok as Marcus rode every breaking wave he could shouting what fun it was! Lola was feeling a little sea sick by the time I caught up with her so we agreed that maybe she would better off back on terra firma. It must have been bad because Marcus followed us in, still shouting what fun he was having though as he arrived on the beach flat out still. We finished off the day by spinning from the shore and then a great barbeque and lots of drinks - once our stomachs had settled. One day the weather will play ball with me for this type of assignment until then it is just a matter of having fun as Marcus remarked many times.
