Yak Talk

Regular readers will know that I have recently embarked on a relatively new form of fishing. Kayak fishing is, as my guests are finding out, a really enjoyable and relaxing way of angling. The best part is the eco friendliness of cruising around finding the fish and enjoying the stunning scenery with only a paddle and you as the power source. My exploits are now limited to the Mediterranean as I have, as predicted, been refused permissions to operate on the reservoirs in the Murcian Region by Hydrologica De Segura. The reason given was that contamination of the water would be a problem. I struggle to see how but that is the decision and of course I will abide by it. Murcia Turistica are really going to lose out unless some leeway is given so visiting anglers can enjoy their sport to the full and experience the hidden treasures of this stunning area. However the Mediterranean is really providing some good fishing and over the Easter weekend despite very poor weather I managed to have a trip out with good friend Fiona, her two boys Arran and Lewis and her brother Jez who was over from the UK for a couple of days. After trolling for Bass with the latest range of YO-Zuri and Grauvell lures we dropped anchor and had a fantastic time a kilometre out a on a drop - off from fourteen to thirty metres. It was teaming with Bream. The Pargo is the local name for it, otherwise known as the Red Porgy or Couch’s Sea Bream. The fish were just off the seabed and obviously in feeding mode. As I have mentioned before it is impossible to use surfcasting style rods from the yaks so 2.4 metre spinning rods have been adapted for light work and what fun it is bringing the fish up a hundred feet on light tackle. We had a fabulous day and finished off with a few of the excellent tasting fish on the barbeque to compliment an excellent spread laid on by our guests.

The APND Kayak Fishing Tournament will take place in Puerto De Mazarron on Tuesday 1st May. This will be a first for the area and will provide some entertainment for my fellow Spanish club members as we head out into the Bay of Mazarron to do battle. On a more serious level I have received enquiries from Portugal and Texas about organising  a truly international kayak fishing competition in September this year. Ten entries are already confirmed from Portugal but I will have to, once again, start the agonising process of gaining permissions from the relative authorities – I will not hold my breath that is for sure! More Yak Talk next month. If you fancy having a trip out visit www.kayakfishingspain.com and make contact.
