We would
all like to say a big thank you for a splendid and memorable day out fishing on
Embalse De Argos.
From being picked up and
dropped off, I don’t think there was one moment we did not enjoy. Sometimes you
book trips up and wonder what have we let ourselves in for – we can only say it
was brilliant and the fishing was great.
Mike Taylor Extremadura Trip May 14th - 18th 2007
Hello Gary,
I would like to thank you and Craig for a great time recently on the
Extremedura trip. It was really memorable and with your help and
assistance I caught some great fish. The good camaraderie between the group
together with all the advice will surely help to make me a top class fisherman
like yourselves (I can live in hope!). As the saying goes - it was the most
fun I have had without laughing!! To land fish of double figure weight is a
most exciting and satisfying accomplishment and I am sure a lot of fisherman
never have the chance of experiencing this - what they should do is go on one
of your trips!
Grateful thanks to the two Alans, big Tel, Eric, Alwyn and Den and of course
yourself and Craig.
Regards,
Mike Taylor (Champion).

Hi Gary,
Once again Thanks
for a fantastic few days, I would not hesitate in recommending the trip to
anyone.
Terry.
Chris & Lee Plenty April 2007
Hi Gary & Cherrill
Thanks for such a great time from myself and Lee.
Gary put a lot of effort in to getting us to catch the fish we caught, it was
not easy at times, but it was a pleasure making the effort.
The scenery at the lakes was absolutely stunning.
The accommodation was first class, the food was excellent, thanks to Cherrill.
You both made us feel very welcome and nothing was to much trouble.
The only complaints I have is the time went to quickly and I've put on a few
too many pounds!!!
Thanks again Chris

New year fishing in Spain
Well it wasn't really a fishing holiday,
as I had to leave Capn Fishy www.capnfishy.co.uk
behind and take the wife instead. This normally means a good few days spent
trailing round shops - it's a concept lost on me, go to Spain for some
winter sunshine, and then spend all your time in the shops. However this
usually only lasts two or three days in all, but this year a couple of extra
factors kicked in....
....First, she who must be obeyed has just become god mother to a baby girl,
so a whole new world of baby shops had to be explored..........
.......plus the Spanish have just discovered the delights of out of town
shopping centres and they are springing up all over - oh great!
No fish, but the
scenery alone made the trip worthwhile
So a call to Gary at
www.garysmithfishing.comand a couple of days fishing were hastily
arranged. Gary told me that the Carp and Barbel fishing had gone off as
there had been some snow melt from the mountains, and the Spanish fish don't
like the cold. Even the reservoir that had fished so well when I was there
in November with Capn F wasn't producing any fish, so there really was
nothing to lose in trying a location new to both of us. We headed off for a
small water north of Murcia, not an easy place to find, it even managed to
shut up Gary's Sat Nav for a while as it tried to figure out where we were!
The trip was worth it though as the scenery was just stunning - 10 out of 10
for location. The local Spanish waterboard man arrived on the scene as we
tackled up, and explained that there were plenty of Barbel, Carp and Black
Bass in the water, but the fishing was very difficult - he wasn't wrong. We
had some half hearted response to the baits we put out, but no fish on the
bank. I tried fly fishing for the Black Bass with no luck - but it was
encouraging that as we packed up in the afternoon, some locals turned up
with fly rods to fish for the bass - so I think next time when the fish are
not feeling so chilly, we'll have a fly only trip there.
Right, so plan B then.......well every good
fishing guide has a plan B, and Gary's was a trip the next day to Hondon
Trucha.
Hondon Trucha
Stillwater trout fishing as we know it is
hard to come by in Spain, but an enterprising Dutchman has opened a trout
fishery near Alicante www.hondontrucha.com
Hondon Trucha is a very small rectangular
fishery about 40 x 60 metres - OK not what we're used to here where we're
spoiled for choice, but it's water, it's full of trout and it beats the heck
out of shopping! Bait fishing, spinning and fly fishing are allowed, but
due to the size of the place, numbers are restricted, so booking is
advised. 20€ gets you a five fish ticket with catch and release after
that. The trout are fairly small, but they do better in the Spanish heat
than bigger stockies, and they fight hard enough.
Gary and I turned up early and as the fishery is quite high up, there was a
hard frost on the ground - an hour or so later the frost was gone and I was
slapping on the sunscreen - not bad for trout fishing in January.
A nice Hondon trout
First I thought I'd introduce the Spanish
fish to the "Yellow Dancer" - they loved it! It was pretty much a fish a
cast, so after eh......quite a few, I thought I'd slow things down a bit by
swinging a buzzer round in the current from the aerator in the centre of the
fishery - no, still a fish every cast. OK, there's nothing rising, so let's
try a dry fly - that did slow things down, I was only getting a fish every
second cast! One Spanish guy who was spinning on the other side, eventually
just sat down and watched, then disappeared off to the lodge and borrowed a
fly rod! I was a bit embarrassed to be catching so many, but it was great
to show the guys fishing with spinners, just how effective the fly can be.
The fishing ends at 1pm, and in fact for most of the year it would be too
hot after that anyway. In the summer when it gets too hot for the trout,
the water is stocked with Black Bass which don't mind the heat so much.
We headed back home feeling a bit better after the previous day's blank, and
in the afternoon I went shopping.......oh well

Barbel Fishing in Spain
It's fair to say that
Capn Fishy and I do
have a bit of a reputation for attracting bad weather when we go off on
fishing holidays - but hey...It was Spain - you know - year round sunshine,
hardly ever rains etc etc.........
..........so on behalf of Capn F and
myself, I like to apologise to Spain for last week's record breaking
torrential rain, gales and floods - Sorry Spain!
For the first half of our fishing trip, the Spanish news was nothing but
shots of cars floating down streets, flooded houses, buildings collapsing -
if you want an idea of just how bad it was click
HERE
Capn F with a nice
Barbel
Luckily we'd booked the services of an
excellent guide - Gary Smith, who managed to pick his way through the
various localised storms and save the week with some spectacular Carp and
Barbel fishing. We'd hoped to get some fly fishing in the river Segura, but
when we turned up at the river it was the colour of ovaltine and completely
unfishable - not only that, but on the dam wall of the reservoir just above
that point in the river were lots of very worried Spanish officials looking
and pointing at the rapidly rising water levels! Time to beat a hasty
retreat.
But Gary took us to a reservoir quite a distance North of Murcia and using
his secret ground bait mix, we had great fun fishing for Barbel and all
sorts of Carp. It was literally fish after fish all day long, to the extent
that we could afford to muck about with the fly rods, trying to get a Carp
on the fly. The problem is that they won't take the fly and turn like a
trout, they come along and suck it in and blow it back out all in one motion
- we tried for hours, but didn't hook one despite take after take - good fun
though.
Using fly rods with
bait to catch some weird stuff - see below
The other part of the original plan was to
do some saltwater flyfishing in the Med for Bass, Bonito etc, but because of
the storms, all the flood waters running into the Med had coloured it up and
knackered the fishing. We left it to the last day to see if it would
settle, but it was still pretty coloured - so after a fruitless few hours
with the fly rods from the shore, we improvised with some small hooks and
split shot and started to see how many different weird species we could
catch - see below
However Gary is off this weekend to pick up his new boat, and that should
enable him to get out and find the Bonito and Tuna shoals - so I'll
hopefully get a shot at that when I go back at new year.
Just some
of the weird fish we caught in the Med - all in all we had 15
different species between us - not big - but interesting

Some serious transport
provided by Gary was necessary for the rough terrain
As I say our holiday could have been a
washout (literally) without the services of Gary who managed to get us some
great fishing, even if it wasn't what was originally planned. Everything
was supplied, transport, food, bait, tackle etc Gary even arranged our
Spanish fishing licences, which are a must, and usually have to be arranged
before you go. So if you are in the Murcia region, and want to do some
fishing, it's worth contacting Gary, his website is
www.garysmithfishing.com
If you want to arrange a fishing holiday, you can even go and stay with Gary
in his impressive villa.
He also runs trips to the Extremadura region of Spain where all the fish
seem to be just enormous.
Cat fish over 100lbs, Carp up to 60lbs, Comizo Barbel and Pike up to 40lbs!
It's on our list!
Just a note to thank you for the hospitality extended to my son James and
myself during our stay with Cherrill and yourself. We had a great time at your
lovely home, where you kept us well fed and watered.
James particularly enjoyed the fishing in the reservoirs and rivers where we
fished successfully and enjoyed the warm weather. The scenary inland from Murcia
was stunningly beautiful with mountains and trees.
The Shore Fishing was an experience and a chance to relax beside the sea in
Puerto de Mazzaron, a lovely town with a Spanish feel to it.
Thank you also for showing us some of the local places of interest, using
your local knowledge to good effect - we would never have found some of the
places on our own.
All in all we had a fantastic holiday and fished in warm weather - a welcome
break from the British Winter!

Dear Gary
My brother-in-law who is a keen fresh water angler came to stay with me
last June
After reading your interesting articles in the RTN I contacted you about
arranging a trip for my brother-in-law and myself who has never fished
before.
It was good how you arranged everything for us from obtaining our
licences and collecting us from Campasol.
The trip up to the reservoir was good in it 'self with all the local
knowledge that you have.
The days fishing for me was wonderful. So relaxing but exciting at the
same time. If I can remember that we caught over thirty fish between us.
For a first timer I caught 14 fish. It was very interesting being shown
how to cast by your good self.
After a long day in the sun. It was nice to have a nice cold beer at the
local bar with you.
If there is anyone who reads Gary's article who has not had the
experience before of fishing I would thoroughly recommend it.

''Had a wonderful time and covered a
variety of good fishing options with
Gary.. and Cherrills friendly and attentive hospitality is truly excellent.
They saw to our every need during the stay, always on hand when needed but
always aware of when we wanted to do our own thing.''
''I would recommend a trip over to the Villa to everyone''
