Watch Out For The Weever Around Our Shores

I have mentioned the very dangerous Weever fish before in one of my columns. The other day I caught one. This enabled me to get a good photo of the spikes that can do all the damage.

The dorsal spikes are poisonous as well as the spikes on the gills so if you catch one of these fish my advice is cut the line and do not touch it. It is easily recognized by the upturned eyes and mouth. In Spain they are called the Areña and although they can be eaten as once they are dead the poison dissipates from the spikes it is best to just let them go. If you do get spiked by one seek medical attention immediately.
