MINIMUM SIZES
Tallas Minimas is the Spanish for minimum sizes and if whilst you are out fishing a Guardia Civil officer or Local Policia officer comes to you and measures the fish in your bucket do not be surprised. A couple of weeks ago at El Portus near Cartagena I was fishing and at about ten o’clock at night when the Guardia arrived. They checked my licence and then asked me to get the fish from my bucket and measure them. They were all above the minimum for the different species I had so everything was alright. The officers thanked me and left, but it does go to show that as anglers we have a responsibility to abide by the rules and regulations of this wonderful country where we are lucky enough to live. If you have a shore fishing licence then in the back of the booklet you receive with it there is a table of minimum sizes. The table below has the minimum size of almost any fish you are likely to catch in these waters. You really need to know which fish are which and I would advise buying a picture chart which are available from most tackle shops for a few euros so you know which fish you are dealing with.

Shore Fishing Licence
If you are unsure about the type of fish or its minimum size then the best option is to put the fish back. If the fish is less than eleven centimetres then definitely return it. Unless you are going to eat the fish it is better to return them straight away then the fish can have a chance to grow and breed and you may have a chance of catching more fish in the future if we do our bit to preserve nature.
